Spy Surf Team Gathers in Hawaii for the Big Wait...
With the onset of winter and another storm season for the North Shore of Oahu, the Spy Surf Team headed up by Team Manager John Oda, packed their quivers and headed to Hawaii. The goals were simple enough, to collect lifestyle and action photos for use in ads and other print media. Unfortunately, the North Shore had other plans.
Mike Losness, Wade Goodall and Erica Hosseini were the first to arrive and after a few very rare flat days they became a little antsy. Sacrifices were made, prayers were chanted, but nothing helped--the mighty Pacific remained calm
and glassy. Right around day four the proverbial pot boiled over and a dance party of mythical status broke out. Photos have been destroyed and video sequestered by the incriminated parties but here are a few details....
Jake Kirschenbaum and Mitch Coleborn have been living in the Volcom house at the Backdoor of Pipeline and even their strict training regime with the rest of Kaiborg's Troops couldn't keep them from chomping at the bit to go surfing.
"I have never seen, I don't think anyone has ever seen, the North Shore this flat for this long." Jake spat out one night at a bar-b-que for the Spy Team.
Dean Morrison arrived late in the trip after a WCT stop in Brazil, as did Ben Bourgeois, but his was a WQS stop in Barbados. "If it has been this flat for a while," Ben half-joked, "then it is bound to get good for me!"
The trip did allow for a rare gathering of the globe-trotting team with Hawaiian locals Torrey Meister, Nathan Carrol, Clay Marzo, Keala Kennelly, Alana Blanchard, Erica Steiner and of course the Florence brothers John John, Nathan and Ivan.
Although the surf was far from epic the team managed to have a blast and hope to do it all over again sometime in the near future. So check back and see what we get up too.
Aloha!
