SPY INTERVIEWS KILIAN GARLAND ABOUT HIS AIRSHOW DIVISION WIN AT THE VQS

KILIAN GARLAND - Spy's Surf Team Manager John Oda sits down with Kilian for a few minutes to discuss his win at the VQS this past weekend...

Hi KG (Kilian Garland)!

Congrats on your recent win at the VQS Championships. I wanted to hit you up with few questions about your win.

John - Did you prepare for this contest? If so, what did you do?

KG - Yes, I prepared a little just by surfing Newport Beach before the event, but nothing major.

John - You surfed against some incredibly well known aerialist in that final such as, Jason "Ratboy" Collins and Aaron "Gorkin" Cormican. How did you mentally prepare yourself for the final? You want to win and there's a big difference in prize money $7,000.00 for 1st place and $1,000.00 for 6th place.

KG - I was a bit nervous going into it. I tried to just have fun and get some good air on the waves. I did not want to walk away empty handed.

John - Now that you are $7,000 richer, what are you going to do with the money?

KG - I think I'm going to pay my taxes from last year and get some new tires on my truck. They are pretty much bald! With the rest I’ll save for a while.

John - So what’s next on your list of things to do?

KG - Trying to plan a Mexico trip and do some training for the US Open!

SPY TEAM RIDER - K-DUB FINISHES AN IMPRESSIVE SUPERCROSS SEASON!

CARLSBAD, Calif., (May 14, 2008) – You’d be hard-pressed to find a more popular rider on the Monster Energy AMA Supercross circuit than Spy Optic’s Kevin “K-Dub” Windham. The highly visible veteran racer from the Torco/Honda team put together one of his best Supercross seasons on record in 2008 and came this close to winning the overall AMA Supercross class championship in Las Vegas - settling on a well-deserved 2nd place overall podium finish on the world’s premier stadium motocross racing stage.

Windham, who ran the his namesake Spy Optic Magneto “Kevin Windham Signature” goggle throughout the 2008 Supercross season, has long been a fan-favorite on the Supercross tour. One of the more approachable riders to both fans and younger pro racers alike, Windham was instrumental in Spy Optic-backed Trey Canard’s (Torco/Honda) ESX Lites championship in his rookie Supercross season, as well as providing solid advice to the rest of the Torco/Honda Lites team.

“I’ve known Kevin for a long time and had the privilege of racing with him in the past. He’s one of the top racers in the world and doesn’t look like he’ll be slowing down anytime soon,” said Spy Optic co-founder and spokesman Jeremy McGrath. “Kevin’s style and determination are both fine examples to up-and-coming riders and, speaking for everyone at Spy, we’re pleased to feature him as Spy’s Athlete of the Month for May.”

Windham’s Supercross season was highlighted by four wins – including back-to-back wins at Seattle and St. Louis heading into the month of May. The effort brought Windham to within ten points of series leader Chad Reed with one round remaining, but Windham couldn’t capitalize at the Vegas finals and Reed won the series straight up – an effort which the ever-gentlemanly Windham was highly congratulatory on.

Said Windham prior to the Vegas finals: “Chad going from last to 2nd at St. Louis put a dimmer on the whole opportunity. 7th or worse if I win it can happen, but it’s going to be tough. But nothing would hold a candle to the championship. It’ll be tough pill to swallow. Ten points I have to make up, ten points I have to be concerned about. I haven’t had this opportunity before, but feel I’m one of the youngest 30s guys out there. I appreciate my fans and the sponsors like Spy supporting our team. And I’m going into the 17th round as hungry as I was at Anaheim 1.”

Thing was Windham never let up - all season long. He racked up 12 podiums in 17 races and never finishing outside the top five, which was – by far – the most consistent numbers of any Supercross class racer.

SPY OPTIC - SUPERCROSS' TOP GOGGLES OF '08!


CARLSBAD, Calif., (May 14, 2008) – The numbers are pretty cut-and-dry: Spy Optic had more overall podium level supercross class racers running its goggles than any other brand on the Monster AMA Supercross Series tour this year – period.

In the premier AMA Supercross class, Spy Optic captured two of the three overall podium positions with Kevin Windham (Torco/Honda) and Andrew Short (Honda) in 2nd and 3rd overall, respectively. And add to that an AMA ESX Lites class championship from Trey Canard (Torco/Honda) and Spy can boast what no other goggle manufacturer can.

“This was an epic competition year for Spy,” said Spy Optic spokesman and co-founder Jeremy McGrath. “No other goggle company had more riders on the overall Supercross class podium – and a Lites class championship to go with it. Everyone at Spy should be pumped with what their riders accomplished in supercross and look forward to continued results at the Nationals.”

Overall during the 2008 supercross season Spy Optic racers amassed nine (9) main event wins and an incredible 26 podium finishes! And joining Spy’s Windham, Short and Canard in the overall podium count were Torco/Honda’s Josh Grant (three podiums) and Jake Weimer (one win, two podiums).

But probably putting the importance of Spy goggles to the athletes best was Torco/Honda’s team owner, Rick Zielfelder of Factory Connection, who said: “If a team wins both classes at the muddiest supercross in history (Daytona, ’08), can anybody question what Spy goggles means to this team?”

Watch for the Torco/Honda Lites class racers, along with Windham, Short, Nick Wey and whole host of other top flight motocross racer as they return to action in two weeks for the opener of the 2008 AMA Toyota Motocross Championships at Glen Helen Raceway (San Bernardino, Calif.).
