WHERE ARE WE?
Rip Curl acquired the event’s unique Floating License from the ASP. The License is made exclusively special by the fact that we have the opportunity to take the tournament to a different location every year. After running the inaugural Search WCT at St. Leu in Reunion Island last year, our events team purchased round the world tickets and went searching for a new location. After plenty of ‘testing’, they began logistics on relocating to ‘somewhere in Mexico’. Mexico boasts a vast and exotic coastline and our Search has led us to a small piece of paradise we will call home from June 20 to July1.

THE WAVE
The wave at La Jolla is a world-class right-hander and is an amazing addition to the already strong Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour. It is a sand bottom point break, that can peel for up to 200m. It feeds off south swells (which are prevalent in June and July) and breaks consistently on high and low tides.

Andy Irons (born 24 July 1978) is a professional surfer. Irons, a kama'aina, was reared on the dangerous and shallow reefs of the North Shore in Kauai, Hawaii, and has three world titles (2002, 2003, 2004), three Quiksilver Pro France titles (2003, 2004, 2005) and two Rip Curl Pro Search titles (2006 & 2007).

He was an inspiration to many young surfers, he and his family host the Annual Irons Brothers Pinetrees Classic, a contest for young citizens, to give back to the community that has given them so much! The governor of Hawaii proclaimed February 13 forever 'Andy Irons day'.

The 2004 movie Blue Horizon (directed by Jack McCoy), portrayed his life on the WCT tour with that of free surfer, David Rastovich. The film also discussed on his long-time rivalry with nine-time world champion Kelly Slater. There has been some debate over whether or not the film was an accurate and fair portrayal of the Irons surfer lifestyle. to add to it, Andy has been the subject of many surf movies, including his latest, Trilogy, starring Andy Irons, Joel Parkinson, and Taj Burrow. Also, Andy is mostly known for his heavy wave surfing and big carves with buckets of spray.

His younger brother, Bruce Irons, is also a competitor on the World championship tour (WCT) surfing. During his childhood Andy would lose to Bruce in contests, but that changed when entered the World Championship Tour, where he dominated the game.

Andy married his girlfriend Lyndie Dupuis on November 25, 2007 in Princeville, Kauai.

He was inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame in Huntington Beach, California in 2008.

In 2009 Andy withdrew from doing the full ASP World Tour season for personal reasons, though he will do a few certian events. He requested a wildcard entry for the 2010 ASP World Tour season and was granted this by ASP President Wayne "Rabbit" Bartholomew so Andy will not have to re-qualify in 2010 via the World Qualifying Series.

SURF BUZZ... Dean Morrison has been building his tour momentum. At the WCT Billabong Pro at J Bay, Dean placed 3rd, beating both Bobby Martinez and Andy Irons, but was narrowly overcome in the semi finals by Kelly Slater. With that result Dean was lifted up to the 9th spot in the overall rating on the elite ASP World Championship Tour...
In the other big race, Ben Bourgeois is having a successful run in the ASP World Qualifying Series. Ben is currently rated #8 and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Look for Ben to carry this momentum into the US Open held in Huntington Beach California.... That’s a wrap!
Keala Kennelly has finished filming the premiere season on HBO’s “John from Cincinnati.” Upon completion of her Hollywood life, KK went down to Puerto Escondido to surf in X Games 13. KK surfed on the women’s US team, which dominated the opposing World Team and in the end KK and the US walked away with the gold...
Spy surf ladies Alana Blanchard and new recruit Caroline Sarran have been getting mad press in Europe, with Alana on the cover of Cooler, and Caroline nabbing BOTH Surfeuses Magazine and Chicks Power...

Comeback of the season: Kyle Chisholm worked his way back from nearly dead-last in moto 2 at Red Bud to finish 15th in the moto and 10th overall on the day... Jake Weimer put in one of his better rides of the year in the second moto at Red Bud as well by nearly catching Josh Grant for third. Weimer eventually finished 4th in the moto and 5th overall that day. Eight Spy team riders finished inside the top 20 at Red Bud... WAKE BUZZ...Wakeboard season is in full swing and Jimmy La Riche is on a tear right now in the Jr. Men’s division winning every event he enters, or at least getting himself on the podium... Danny Harf is currently in 4th place on the Pro Tour standings, while Shane Bonifay is out and about spreading the stoke and showing how a board is supposed to be ridden with the style that only Shane possesses... bro Parks Bonifay is finally recovered from knee surgery and took first place at The Carnival, an all rail event. Be sure to check out the Parks Bonifay documentary when it releases in a few months...
Chad Sharpe is holding it down on the contest side of things as well, getting himself on the podium a few times this season so far...
Melissa Marquardt just placed third at Nationals and be sure to check her 6-page 20-question interview in the August issue of Alliance Wakeboard Magazine... Santino “Tino” Santori is nursing a broken bone in his foot, but should be back to 100% in the next few weeks. That is it for the world of wake, see you at the lake…


SNOW BUZZ...MFM will be at Camp of Champions in Whistler BC from July 5th through 10th riding what can only be described as a ridiculous park, and Todd Richards is also contemplating an appearance with the rest of the DC team July 14th to 21st... Louie Vito and Stevie Bell have been honing their summertime shred skills at the infamous Windell's Summer Snowboard Camp and may make an appearance a little further north along with MFM at C.O.C...
Darrell Mathes has been rounding out his winter travels with some time in LA rubbing elbows with the rich and famous. After a season of shooting with Mack Dawg Productions, Mathes is enjoying his well deserved time off...
DCP recently returned to his Squamish BC home after surfing in Costa Rica at his secret compound for the last few weeks. His shoulder is back to 100% and he will be racking up the air miles this summer getting his snowboard fix in the southern hemisphere—Chile first then on to New Zealand. Also keep an eye out for his part in Mack Dawg's new vid this fall, 'Picture This'...


SKI BUZZ... Summertime doesn't mean "vacation" for Spy Ski athletes, “The glaciers in Whistler and Mt Hood are going off”, report Charles Gagnier, Mike Clarke, and Tom Wallisch, all coaching at one of the many summer training camps...
Other athletes, including Stefan Thomas and Adam Delorme are en route to the Southern Hemisphere to catch winter in full swing for various shooting and training endeavors... Corey Vanular, along with Gagnier, Stefan, Liam Downey, and JF Houle are all on their way to Denver for the Spy 2008 ad shoot...
