X GAMES 13 WRAP-UP! 2007



Another X Games has come and gone and without a doubt, it was one of the event’s all-time best! In the most-viewed X Games ever, Spy athletes not only brought home the medals, but were all over the television broadcasts and on EXPN.com.

The big winners were Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg in Freestyle Moto, and Kevin Windham in the first-ever Moto X Racing event. Both Twitch and K-Dub pulled out their respective tricks to bring home the bronze— Twitch had a great run, but in a call that left many in disagreement with the judges, he was upset in the semi-finals by Nate Adams. In a nail-biting race for silver and bronze in Moto X Racing, Kevin bode his time until a well-timed pass of Chad Reed brought him home in third. Also in the Freestyle Moto semi-finals, Jeremy Lusk went for broke, attempting a Back Flip-Heart Attack-Indian Air, but under-rotated and exploded on the landing. He walked away, but was pushed just shy of a medal.

Danny Way, though sidelined by his fourth knee surgery, was the go-to commentator for all things Mega Ramp, and he had his own featured blog on EXPN called fittingly D's Nötz.

Not to be out-done, Jeremy McGrath broke it down in his own “Nackity Nac” blog, also on EXPN. McGrath had a busy X Games, competing in both the Moto X Step Up and in SuperMoto. MC finished out of the medals, but was seen everywhere appeasing audiences both at the signing table and in various on-camera appearances.

SPY BUZZ!!!!!!!!!!!! - AUGUST 2007

SURF BUZZ... The October issue of Surfer Mag is a big one for Spy—not only did Dean Morrison get the cover, but Spy’s East Coast Surf Marketing Maven Zander Morton wrote a feature story on his trip to Guatemala and even scored a few nice action shots to boot... Young Guns 3 premiered at the US Open of Surfing back in July, and once again Clay Marzo is a heavy hitter in the film. Clay scored the opening part, setting not only the pace for the entire movie, but new boundaries for modern-day surfing. His arial tactics and freak show maneuvers are mind-boggling. MOTO BUZZ... Andrew Short is tied for first in the AMA/Toyota Motocross Championship going into the last 3 rounds... Spy MX’s youngest phenom, ten-year old Adam Cianciarulo dominated at Loretta’s, winning every moto and walking away with two more championships in the 85cc 7-11 stock and mod classes... Also at Loretta’s, Trey Canard took 1st in the MX Lites A and MX Lites A Pro Sport, and Brandon Mays rounded out third in both 85cc 12-13 stock and mod... Up in Canada, Paul Carpenter claimed a CMRC Championship in the MX1 Class. His teammate Jeff Gibson is in a close points battle for 2nd place with one round left...

WAKE BUZZ... The 2007 Pro Tour wrapped up on July 22nd in Portland, Oregon. When all was said and done, Jimmy La Riche ended up in 2nd place overall for the Junior Men’s division. In the pro division, Chad Sharpe ended up 3rd overall and Danny Harf finished in 4th place... Next up is Worlds, which will be held August 23rd – 26th in Reno, Nevada. Stay tuned—Danny, Chad, Jimmy, Shane Bonifay, Tino Santori and Melissa Marquardt will all be vying for Worlds titles.

SNOW BUZZ...The ’07-08 snowboard films are ready to kick off shortly, and Spy team riders will be showcasing their talents in a slew of flicks... Erik Christensen, Justin Bennee, and MFM appear in the new Absinthe release 'Optimistic'... DCP reportedly has a standout part in Mack Dawg's 'Picture This.' Also keep an eye out for Darrell Mathes who has moved into the “A” ranks, scoring his first full-fledged Dawgger part... Louie Vito has been chasing the endless winter in the South Pacific, competing at the New Zealand Open last week... Deciding to keep it real staying state-side, Stevie Bell was seen 'hang drying' all his clothes behind his Sandy, Utah home in fear that the dryer would shrink them to a mere XXXL size... until next time... out!

Name: Danny Way

About: Danny Way (born April 15, 1974 in Portland, Oregon) is a professional skateboarder. He rode for Powell Peralta in the late 1980s. He was featured, with Chet Thomas, in very short segment in the Powell video "Public Domain." Soon after Way left Powell to ride for H-Street, a then little known company. H-Street became a huge success, and Way took vert and mini ramp skating to previously unimagined levels.

Why Spy: I have been with Spy for 11 yrs and have seen so many sunglass companies’ come and go, but Spy has withstood the test of time by producing the highest quality shades on the market.

After a big fall or injury; what motivates me to get up do it again: This is my life. Skating is all that I know and all that I want to be doing, so I will do what ever it takes to get back on my feet and on my board.

Favorite trick: Well that is always changing. Progression is what drives me. What ever the last trick I landed is usually my favorite.

Describe how I feel when I can’t skate due to an injury or travel, etc.: It is the worst feeling on the planet and like I said I will do what ever I have to in order to get back as fast as I can. Injuries motivate me to come back stronger and more focused.

Favorite country, spot, etc.: The DC warehouse is my local spot, but I love finding new terrain. It doesn’t matter where it is.

A perfect day is: Inventing a new trick, hanging with my fam and not talking on my cell phone.
