7 Santa Cruz
County Beaches to Be Protected and Opened for Public Use
The Trust for
Public Land (TPL) has bought for preservation and public use approximately 7,000
acres of privately-owned, coastal land, including 5 miles of coastline, in north
Santa Cruz County in California. The TPL will be turning the land over to the
State and Federal government as protected open space. Legal, public access at
the following great beaches will be established: Scott Creek, Davenport Landing,
Davenport, Sharktooth, Bonny Doon, Yellow Bank and Laguna Creek. This is great
news. Read more.

Surfrider Foundation Panhandle Chapter Makes First Waves
The Surfrider Foundation Panhandle Chapter in Florida is in its
organizing phase and recently held its first event at Destin Beach. The chapter
saw about 50 new people at the beach clean-up. Even Destin's Beach Patrol took
part with the local volunteers. The amount of trash collection was enormous,
since some of the young guys competed to get the prizes for most trash
collected. Tropical Storm Alberto, non-existent anywhere else in Florida, graced
the group's event so there were some rides to be had. Do you live or vacation in
the Florida Panhandle? Email
panhandle@surfrider.org on how you can
get involved with the Organizing Committee of the Panhandle Chapter.

Pearl Jam
Donates $30,000 to Help Surfrider Save Trestles
Thanks to the members of
Pearl Jam, the Surfrider Foundation was able to take a big step forward with its
efforts to save the surf break and surrounding watershed at Trestles. The band
donated $1.00 from every ticket sold (nearly $30,000 total) from their recent
sold out appearances in Los Angeles to help with Surfrider's Save Trestles
campaign. The donation was made through the group's Vitalogy Foundation and was
in memory of longtime band friend and Surfrider Foundation activist Dave "The
Rapscallion" Russell. "Over the years, Pearl Jam has been there for the
Surfrider Foundation time and time again," says Matt McClain, Surfrider
Foundation spokesperson. "Both the band and its fans truly understand the
importance of building community by giving something back." Read Surfrider
Foundation's press release.
The New Jersey and New York coasts
with the proposed Clean Ocean Zone
Clean Ocean Zone Proposed for NY
and NJ Coast
Two New Jersey Congressmen introduced legislation recently
to create a "Clean Ocean Zone" in the New York, New Jersey Bight, which runs
from Montauk, NY to Cape May, NJ and is the most densely developed coastline in
the world. The successful establishment of the Clean Ocean Zone would lock in 20
years' worth of victories in ocean water improvement by outlawing all types of
dumping and irresponsible industrial development in the bight. The Surfrider
Foundation Jersey Shore Chapter is a proud, active member of Clean Ocean
Action's coalition. Working to establish the "Clean Ocean Zone" represents a
much-needed, proactive approach to regional coastal environmentalism. Read more.
Shoreline marine debris in Hawaii
NOAA Is Cleaning Marine
Debris in Hawaii
Here's something positive for our oceans and coasts
that our Federal Government is doing. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) is in the process of cleaning up 129 tons of marine debris
in and around the main Hawaiian Islands. NOAA has done an extensive helicopter
survey of marine debris in the main Hawaiian Islands, spotting quite a bit of
abandoned fishing gear as well as the expected plastic detritus of our
high-consumptive society. In addition to its aesthetic shortcomings, marine
debris is harmful (and even deadly) to ocean life. More info on the Hawaii
cleanup. Also, info on NOAA's Marine Debris Program.
Polluted Waters Sicken Over 1 Million Beach Visitors
Annually in Southern California
Researchers at UCLA and Stanford
University have recently published a study whose findings state that between
about 627,800 and 1,479,200 people annually get gastrointestinal illnesses from
bacteria in the near-shore beach waters of Orange and Los Angeles Counties. The
study's number for those who get sick is likely underestimated, as the study
excluded cases involving eyes, ears, and nose health issues. This research
highlights the public health need to reduce polluted runoff, sewage spills, and
other sources of beach water contamination. More info (free registration
required).
Rob Machado, Surfrider Foundation team member
Surfrider Foundation Team Member Rob Machado Wins US Open
On July
30th, Surfrider Foundation team member Rob Machado won the 2006 Honda U.S. Open
of Surfing presented by O'Neill in Huntington Beach, CA. Drawing upon his
experience and familiarity with HB Pier, Machado was able to emerge victorious
for the third time in this event. While all of the action this week was focused
on the competition going on in the water, for the last several months, local
Surfrider Foundation activists have been ramping up their own battle to stop a
planned desalinization project in Huntington Beach. The desalination plant would
draw in tens of millions of gallons of ocean water a day, in the process killing
substantial amounts marine life including crustaceans, fish and mollusks. Read

Public Comments Needed on EPA's
Proposed, Inadequate Regulations for Factory Farms
In 2003, a Federal
judge ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) existing
regulations of animal waste from factory farms were inadequate and had to be
strengthened so that they would be in accordance with the Clean Water Act. A
long 3 years later, the EPA has finally proposed what they consider more
stringent rules for animal waste from CAFOs (concentrated animal feedlot
operations). Unfortunately, the EPA's new rules are inadequate and rely too much
on self-regulation and do nothing to outlaw open pit lagoons of waste. [North
Carolina beach enthusiasts still remember the 25 million gallon hog waste lagoon
spill into the New River which contaminated local beaches.] Public comment on
the new rules are allowed up until August 14, 2006. Here's a link to the new
rules with info on how to submit your comments. Here's a recent article on the
subject.
